It’s important that our voices are heard by our elected representatives. Our representatives should include in the decision making process a consideration as to how their decision will impact and reflect upon their demographically diverse community.
“Our elected representatives should reflect their community”
We need to leverage our combined coalition to make sure our elected representatives are advocating on our behalf, especially in our focus areas, so that we are equally represented and gain a seat at the table.
As a collaborative group we need to ensure that the issues important to us, like a quality and affordable education, are listened to and acted upon by our elected representatives.
“Our elected representatives need to advocate on issues important to their community”
Additionally, we need to provide support and training so that our demographically diverse community becomes active in government, by first and foremost, voting, also serving on committees and by becoming elected officials.
This will include the three formal layers of government- Local, State and Federal.
Our goal is to provide education and training to people who are interested in becoming active in government, so they can begin to serve on committees, serve on school district boards, serve as members of a city council, prepare themselves for service as their district state representative, and serve at the federal level as a House or Senate representative.
Furthermore, it’s imperative that our community members are registered to vote and become actively involved in the political process, by at a minimum voting on their own behalf for the candidate who they think will best represent their own interest. We will also work at the state level to ensure that under-represented groups understand how they register to vote, and in the event where state’s have implemented new or additional voting requirements, like voter IDs, we help them overcome those obstacles via education and financial resources.
“Our right to vote should be unfettered, with easy access to vote in person and with mail-in ballots”
